Hey all, I'm currently living in New York City, and have an idea for a new kind of business. I'm looking to open a new kind of bookstore within the next 5 years. As of now, I have no business education, and no kind of grants, funds, or money to do this. It's just in the beginning stages of planning. Ok, it's going to be a bookstore primarily for people who like listening to books. It'll have audio books, cds, and whatever else. I also plan to have a cafe, and services geared for blind or visually impaired people. I'd love people's imputs. Any suggestions would be great. Also any comments.
Sounds like a neat idea, but you need to do some market research to see if their are enough people that would use the store. If not no matter what you do it won't work. My concern is that we can get books from our libraries, the net and other places. And the other question would be why would I want to listen to a book in a store when I would do that at home? Unfortunately sighted folks can read and talk cause they have eyes. Again its all about customers, will they come. Just my opinions from a marketing major.
That is also my concern. My plan is to not have people listen to books in the store, just purchase them. I'd also have services such as volenteers to come into the store to read excerpts of a certain book, and then that day have a sale on that particular book. Also, I'd have book discussion groups held there, and a saturday morning program for kids. I'd also have a cafe, a place where customers can sit, and listen to their books, and eat a cookie and drink a cup of coffee or tea. I live in New York City, so I think there are enough blind people around the area. Also, the store isn't only for the blind, a lot of people listen to audio books. Is it sounding any better? Lol. Keep that advice coming!!!!!
Sounds like a neat idea. I'd check with the various blind organizations like the ,lighthouse, American Foundation for the Blind, Jewish Braille Institute, etc. to see what their thoughts are, and how much support you'd get from them. Good Luck, Lou
Thanks for the idea!! I'll do that. Does anyone know what kind of support I'd get from those organizations? Also, I'm thinking about moving to boston, how do you think a business like a bookstore would do there?
Well, that's an interesting question. You'le severaal international blindness groupss there like NBP, WGBH, and of course, Perkins School for the Blind. I meant to say groups with international reputations. Might be worth checking them out as well.
Lou
thanks for the help!!!!! Keep it coming lol
